The Gone series relates most to Lord of the Flies. The main story line of children surviving in a world without grown ups is very obvious. Other smaller details such as the unexpected leader rising to power as per the peoples request, the struggle for food and survival, and the division of the main group into two smaller groups are also very similar to events that occurred in Lord of the Flies. Ralph and Sam also have similar lives. They both rise to power because of popular vote from the people around them. Their personalities are comparable because while they take on the responsibility it is very hard to keep everyone happy all of the time causing unrest among the people and the feeling of being overwhelmed in both of them. They each surround themselves with their loyal people and take on anyone against them. These fights occur because the side that originally splits, often portrayed as the "bad" or "wrong" side, are unhappy with how they are being treated and how much freedom they have. Both Lord of the Flies and the Gone series include destruction of the area each group takes over and many deaths of children. On a deeper level, both feature characters who are forced to test their loyalty to their morals and the transition from civil society to savagery. Although Lord of the Flies does not feature "mutants" or super humans, both present thinking into the future about changes in humanity.
