There were many similarities between the book and the movie; however, there were more differences which lessened the emotional impact of the movie as compared to the book. Symbolism and character wise, fire plays a much smaller role. Although Brian is a career fire fighter and he and Anna spend time at the fire house, the arson seen from Jesse in the book and the amplitude of how it represents a form of control is not well conveyed in the movie. Another major difference is that in the book, the Fitzgeralds are assigned a guardian ad litem named Julia. However, in the movie, Cambell acts as both Anna's lawyer and the guardian ad litem. Some similarities do remain between the two though. Major plot points such as Anna's death, the real reason for the lawsuit, and most of the emotional tension remain the same. Both the book and the movie manage to reel the reader/viewer into the lives of the Fitzgeralds and portray the deep emotional struggles that each is feeling.
